Telegram group auto-moderation: what Telegram does itself and what it lacks

When a group grows, spam grows with it: ads for other channels, links, forwarded "signals", toxic messages. Telegram gives you basic moderation tools out of the box — but they have a ceiling. Let's break down what the messenger itself covers and what you end up adding with a bot.

What Telegram does itself

Native permission settings are your first line of defense, and worth setting up regardless.

• Member permissions. In group settings you can forbid members from sending links, media, stickers, polls, and enable approval of join requests.
• Slow mode. Limits how often one member can post — kills flooding.
• Admin rights. Granular delegation: who can ban, delete messages, invite.
• Built-in anti-spam (Aggressive Anti-Spam). For groups, Telegram automatically catches some obvious spam.
• Manual moderation. Deleting messages, banning and restricting (mute) members by hand.

That's enough for a small group with active admins. But there are gaps.

What Telegram doesn't cover

• Fine-grained content rules. Natively you can't say "delete messages with mentions of other channels, but not mine", or "block by a stop-word list".
• Allowlists. Banning links entirely is blunt: your own links and useful sources get caught too.
• Escalation cascade. Telegram has no "warning first, then mute for N minutes, ban on repeat" logic. It's all manual.
• A unified action log. Who deleted/banned what, when and why — natively it isn't collected in one place.
• Automation without an on-duty admin. At night or under a flood of messages, manual moderation doesn't scale.

The layer the TribeSync bot adds

How to set it up

First set the native permissions in the group itself (join requests, basic permissions, slow mode). Then add the TribeSync bot as an admin with permission to delete messages and restrict members — and enable the filters you need in the "Moderation" section. From there the bot works on its own, and you see everything it does in the log.

This way you get both solid baseline protection from Telegram and a flexible layer of automatic moderation on top — without manual routine and without losing control.
